The 1947 Mexican 50 Pesos Gold Coin, commonly known as the Centenario, is one of the world’s most recognisable large gold bullion coins. Struck by the Mexican Mint, this impressive coin contains 37.5 grams of pure gold and is produced in 21.6 carat (900 fineness) gold.
First introduced in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain, the Centenario has become popular with both gold investors and collectors due to its substantial gold content, historic design and internationally recognised status.
The obverse features Winged Victory (El Ángel) holding a laurel wreath and broken chains, with the famous Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in the background. The inscriptions include “50 PESOS”, “37.5 Gr. ORO PURO” and the dates 1821 and 1947.
The reverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle holding a snake while perched on a cactus, surrounded by the inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”
Why Buy a Mexican 50 Pesos Gold Coin?
With more than 1.2 troy ounces of pure gold, the Mexican 50 Pesos is considerably larger than a standard one-ounce bullion coin. Its combination of high gold content, distinctive design and historic significance makes it an attractive option for investors looking to diversify their physical gold holdings.
The Centenario is also recognised internationally, making it a well-established form of physical investment gold.
About the 1947 Mexican 50 Pesos
Although the coin carries the date 1947, buyers should be aware that large numbers of official Mexican Mint restrikes were produced in later years using the 1947 date. Therefore, a coin dated 1947 is not necessarily an original coin struck during 1947.
Unless specifically stated otherwise, our 1947-dated Centenario coins are sold primarily for their gold content and bullion value, rather than as a guaranteed original-1947 numismatic issue.
Condition
This is a pre-owned bullion coin and may display marks, scratches, toning or other signs of handling and previous ownership.
These cosmetic characteristics do not affect the stated precious-metal content. The photographs show the type and condition you can expect; where applicable, the coin supplied may vary slightly from the example pictured.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much gold is in a Mexican 50 Pesos coin?
A Mexican 50 Pesos Centenario contains 37.5 grams of pure gold, equivalent to approximately 1.2057 troy ounces of fine gold.
Is the Mexican 50 Pesos coin pure gold?
No. The coin is struck in 900 fineness gold, equivalent to 90% gold or approximately 21.6 carat. Its heavier overall weight means it still contains 37.5g of pure gold.
Why does the coin say 37.5 Gr. Oro Puro?
“Oro Puro” means pure gold in Spanish. The inscription confirms that the coin contains 37.5 grams of pure gold.
Is every 1947 Mexican 50 Pesos coin actually from 1947?
No. The Mexican Mint produced substantial numbers of official restrikes carrying the 1947 date, so the date alone should not be used to determine the coin’s actual year of manufacture.
Is the Mexican 50 Pesos CGT free in the UK?
Unlike UK legal-tender coins such as qualifying Gold Britannias and Sovereigns, Mexican 50 Pesos coins do not receive the same UK legal-tender Capital Gains Tax exemption. Individual tax circumstances can vary.
