Scrap Gold Calculator UK

Got old gold jewellery, broken chains, or mismatched earrings sitting in a drawer? Our free scrap gold calculator tells you exactly what it's worth based on live UK gold prices — in seconds.

Whether it's 9ct, 18ct, or 22ct gold, we'll give you a transparent, accurate valuation with no obligation. At 888 Bullion, we pay some of the most competitive scrap gold prices in the UK.

Use our gold calculator to get your instant estimate, then read on to understand exactly how scrap gold is valued and what to expect when you sell.

How Is Scrap Gold Valued?

Scrap gold is valued on two things only: weight and purity. Unlike jewellery sold in a shop, the craftsmanship, brand, or design of the piece has no bearing on its scrap value. You're selling the metal content — nothing more.

The formula is:

Scrap gold value = Weight (troy oz) × Purity (decimal) × Live spot price (£/troy oz)

For example, a 9ct gold bracelet weighing 10 grams:

  • Weight in troy oz: 10 ÷ 31.1 = 0.3215 troy oz
  • 9ct purity = 37.5% = 0.375
  • Pure gold content: 0.3215 × 0.375 = 0.1206 troy oz
  • At £2,500/oz spot: 0.1206 × £2,500 = £301.50

Buyers will offer a percentage of this figure to cover their costs. At 888 Bullion, we offer highly competitive rates — particularly for larger quantities.

Gold Purity Guide for Scrap Gold

Before you calculate, you need to know the purity of your gold. Check for a hallmark stamp on the piece — this tells you the carat. If you're unsure, our British hallmark guide explains exactly what to look for.

  • 9ct gold — 37.5% pure gold (hallmark: 375) — most common UK jewellery
  • 14ct gold — 58.5% pure gold (hallmark: 585)
  • 18ct gold — 75% pure gold (hallmark: 750) — common in higher-end jewellery
  • 22ct gold — 91.67% pure gold (hallmark: 916) — found in coins and some Asian jewellery
  • 24ct gold — 99.9% pure gold (hallmark: 999) — bars and some coins

Not sure what carat your gold is? We offer XRF metal testing in London — a fast, non-destructive way to verify purity on the spot.

What Types of Scrap Gold Do We Buy?

At 888 Bullion, we buy all types of scrap gold including:

  • Broken or damaged gold jewellery (rings, chains, bracelets, earrings)
  • Old or unwanted gold jewellery
  • Gold teeth and dental gold
  • Gold watches and watch parts
  • Gold coins that are damaged or not suitable for resale as bullion
  • Mixed gold lots and collections

We do not buy gold-plated items, gold-filled jewellery, or items that cannot be verified as solid gold.

How to Get the Best Price for Your Scrap Gold

A few tips to maximise what you receive:

  • Know your carat — check hallmarks before you come in. Mixed carats in one lot can complicate valuation.
  • Weigh it yourself first — use a digital scale at home so you have a rough idea of what to expect. Remember gold is weighed in troy ounces (1 troy oz = 31.1g).
  • Sell in larger quantities — bigger lots often attract better rates as they're more efficient to process.
  • Get it verified — our XRF testing service gives an instant, accurate purity reading with no damage to the piece.
  • Check live prices — gold prices fluctuate daily. Check our today's prices page before you sell to understand the market.

Scrap Gold vs Bullion — What's the Difference?

If you have gold coins or bars in good condition, they may be worth significantly more than their scrap value. Investment-grade bullion like Sovereigns and Britannias carries a premium above spot price due to collector and investor demand.

Before selling any gold coins as scrap, always check whether they have numismatic or bullion value first. Our team can advise you in person at our Hatton Garden location.
