How Much Is My 24ct Gold Worth?

24ct gold is the purest form of gold you can own — 99.9% pure, with no other metals mixed in. It's the standard used for investment-grade gold bars and many of the world's most sought-after bullion coins, including the Gold Britannia. At current gold prices, even small amounts of 24ct gold are worth significant sums.

This guide explains exactly how 24ct gold is valued, how to calculate what yours is worth, and how to get the best price when you sell. For an instant figure, use our free gold calculator.

What Is 24ct Gold?

24ct gold contains 99.9% pure gold (sometimes expressed as 999.9 fine). It's the highest purity of gold available and is hallmarked with 999 or 999.9. Because it contains virtually no other metals, it's softer and more malleable than lower-carat gold, which is why it's rarely used in everyday jewellery.

Common items made from 24ct gold include:

  • Gold bars — from 1g to 1kg and beyond, the standard for investment gold
  • Gold Britannias — the UK's flagship bullion coin, 99.99% pure since 2013
  • Chinese Gold Pandas — 99.9% pure gold coins
  • Canadian Gold Maple Leafs — 99.99% pure gold coins
  • Some Asian jewellery and ornaments

How to Calculate the Value of 24ct Gold

Because 24ct gold is 99.9% pure, its value is almost exactly equal to the spot price. The formula is:

Value = Weight (troy oz) × 0.999 × Spot price (£/troy oz)

In practice, for 24ct gold you can simply multiply the weight in troy ounces by the spot price. Here are some worked examples based on a spot price of £2,500 per troy oz:

  • 1g of 24ct gold: (1 ÷ 31.1) × £2,500 = £80.39
  • 5g of 24ct gold: (5 ÷ 31.1) × £2,500 = £401.93
  • 10g of 24ct gold: (10 ÷ 31.1) × £2,500 = £803.86
  • 1 troy oz (31.1g) of 24ct gold: = £2,500.00
  • 100g gold bar: (100 ÷ 31.1) × £2,500 = £8,038.59
  • 1kg gold bar: (1000 ÷ 31.1) × £2,500 = £80,385.85

24ct Gold Value Per Gram Today

The value of 24ct gold per gram is directly tied to the spot price. As a rough guide:

  • At £2,000/oz spot — 24ct gold is worth approximately £64.31 per gram
  • At £2,500/oz spot — 24ct gold is worth approximately £80.39 per gram
  • At £3,000/oz spot — 24ct gold is worth approximately £96.46 per gram

Because 24ct gold is essentially pure, the melt value and the market value are very close — unlike lower-carat jewellery where buyers discount for refining costs.

Gold Bars — Investment Value vs Scrap Value

If you have gold bars from a recognised mint (such as PAMP, Valcambi, Royal Mint, or Heraeus), they are almost certainly worth more than their melt value. Branded bars carry a premium due to their assay certification, recognisability, and ease of resale.

Unbranded or damaged bars may be valued closer to melt. Our team can advise you on the best way to sell at our Hatton Garden office.

See our guide on gold bars by size to understand how bar size affects value and premiums.

Gold Britannias — More Than Just Melt Value

The Gold Britannia is the UK's premier bullion coin and is 99.99% pure — even purer than most gold bars. Britannias carry a premium above spot due to investor demand, and crucially, they are CGT-free for UK investors as legal tender coins.

How Much Will I Actually Be Offered for My 24ct Gold?

For 24ct gold, buyers typically offer a higher percentage of spot than for lower-carat items because there's no refining required. The offer depends on:

  • Type — branded bars and recognised coins attract the best prices
  • Condition — bars with intact assay cards and coins in good condition command premiums
  • Quantity — larger amounts typically attract better rates
  • Verification — bars and coins that can be quickly authenticated are processed faster

If you have unbranded gold or are unsure of the purity, our XRF testing service provides instant, non-destructive verification.

Common 24ct Gold Items and Their Approximate Values

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my gold is 24ct?

Look for a hallmark stamped on the piece or bar — 24ct gold is marked with 999 or 999.9. Bars from reputable mints will also have an assay certificate. Our XRF testing service can verify purity instantly if you're unsure.

Is 24ct gold worth more than 22ct?

Yes — 24ct gold is 99.9% pure vs 91.67% for 22ct, so per gram it's worth approximately 9% more at the same spot price. However, 22ct coins like Sovereigns often carry higher premiums above melt due to their collector appeal.

Are gold bars easy to sell?

Yes — especially bars from recognised mints with intact assay cards. They're among the easiest gold items to value and sell quickly. See our guide on gold bars by size for more detail.

Do I pay tax when selling 24ct gold?

Gold bars are subject to Capital Gains Tax on any profit above your annual CGT allowance. However, 24ct Gold Britannias are CGT-free as UK legal tender. See our CGT-free gold guide for full details.

How quickly will I get paid?

In-person sales at our Hatton Garden office are paid the same day. Postal sales are paid within 24 hours of receipt and verification.
